Furgenics Deshedding Shampoo is a 16:1 concentrate built for heavy double-coated breeds — Huskies, German Shepherds, Goldens, Labs, Akitas, Malamutes, Samoyeds, and the rest of the salon-volume undercoat shedders. Hydrolyzed keratin and safflower oil penetrate the undercoat, release dead hair on the rinse, and condition the topcoat. One gallon yields up to 17 working gallons per bottle at professional dilution — roughly the cost of a cup of coffee per working gallon at pro dilution.

Why hydrolyzed keratin and safflower oil work for deshedding

Hydrolyzed keratin is the central chemistry. The protein fragments are small enough to penetrate the hair cuticle and bond with damaged sections — which both reinforces healthy hair and helps loose undercoat detach cleanly during the rinse. A deshedding shampoo without hydrolyzed protein is essentially a regular shampoo with a different label; the protein is what does the work.

Safflower oil pairs in as the conditioning agent. Light enough to condition the topcoat without weighing down the undercoat. Heavier oils like coconut or shea work well on curly coats but produce drag on a Husky's plush undercoat or a GSD's coarse topcoat — safflower stays out of the way.

The base is sulfate-free, paraben-free, pH-balanced for dog skin, and tearless. Double coats need their natural oils to stay weather-resistant; over-stripping with sulfates produces a soft, greasy-feeling coat that owners notice immediately. The base cleans aggressively enough for production salon use without strip-cleaning the protective layer.

When to use Furgenics Deshedding Shampoo

Coat types and breeds: double-coated, thick, undercoat-heavy, heavy seasonal shedders. The standard cast: Siberian Huskies, German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Australian Shepherds, Bernese Mountain Dogs, Akitas, Malamutes, Samoyeds, Chow Chows, Newfoundlands, Border Collies. Also appropriate for heavy-shedding single-coated breeds where the undercoat-release chemistry helps even without a true double coat to penetrate.

Salon scenarios: daily driver for any salon seeing 5+ heavy double-coat dogs per week; seasonal-blowout protocol during spring and late-summer coat-blow periods; rebooked deshed appointments where owners are paying specifically for undercoat removal; multi-step deshedding services with second-pass shampoo and HV-dry finish. For full Husky vs GSD protocol notes and the complete deshed workflow, see our deshedding protocol guide.

How it compares to alternatives

FURminator deShedding Ultra Premium ShampooFURminator deShedding Ultra Premium Shampoo: $86.01 CAD (as of 2026-05, Amazon Canada). The mindshare leader for deshedding. Most retail-channel customers recognize the brand. Honest read: on a per-dog basis FURminator works fine, but on per-gallon economics it's materially above Furgenics in both markets for a comparable undercoat-release outcome. Production salons running FURminator out of retail bottles burn through inventory fast.

Coat Handler Anti-Shed ShampooCoat Handler Anti-Shed Gallon: $78.95 CAD (as of 2026-05, Amazon Canada). 15:1 concentrate with long salon history; the closest direct head-to-head on chemistry and dilution math. Comparable undercoat-release performance. Where Furgenics differentiates: direct-to-salon pricing in both markets (no Amazon-channel margin), full INCI transparency, and the matching Furgenics Deshedding Conditioner ($24.99) for the complete two-step deshedding system.

Bark2Basics De-Shedding is the other Amazon-channel option (32:1 concentrate). The higher dilution stretches further per gallon but requires more precise measurement at the bath table; many salons find 16:1 concentrate a more practical working ratio.

For double-coated dogs with diagnosed skin sensitivity that can't tolerate the more active deshedding chemistry, fall back to Furgenics Hypoallergenic Shampoo ($24.99) instead.

How to dilute and use on a heavy double coat

  1. Pre-blow with a high-velocity dryer for 5–8 minutes before water. Most loose undercoat comes out dry; the shampoo handles the next layer that's still attached. Skipping the pre-blow doubles the bath time.
  2. Saturate the coat completely with warm water. On a Husky, expect 3–5 minutes to fully wet down to the skin.
  3. Dilute at 16:1 concentrate in a mixing bottle. For a heavy seasonal blowout, a stronger 12:1 first pass releases more undercoat; follow with the standard ratio on the second pass.
  4. Massage 4–5 minutes, longer than a routine wash. Hydrolyzed keratin needs contact time to bond with the hair shaft and release the loose undercoat.
  5. Rinse 5–7 minutes minimum — water should run completely clear. Retained shampoo plus dead undercoat mats during the blow-out.
  6. Follow with Furgenics Deshedding Conditioner ($24.99) at 16:1 concentrate, leave 2–3 minutes, rinse fully.
  7. HV dry while continuing to release undercoat. Work the nozzle close to skin, against the lay of the coat. Expect another 1–2 cups of dead undercoat on a heavy seasonal blowout.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Furgenics Deshedding Shampoo actually reduce shedding? +
It works by deeply cleansing and loosening the undercoat during the wash, so when you follow up with brushing the loose fur releases cleanly rather than ending up on your client's couch. Used as part of a complete grooming process (shampoo + conditioner + brushing), it substantially reduces post-bath shedding for 2–3 weeks.
What's the dilution ratio for Furgenics Deshedding Shampoo? +
Up to 16:1 concentrate with water — up to 17 working gallons per bottle at professional dilution.
Which breeds is this shampoo best for? +
Double-coated, heavy-shedding breeds — Huskies, German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Akitas, and Samoyeds. Particularly useful during twice-yearly coat blows when pet owners are overwhelmed by shedding volume.
How long should I leave the shampoo on? +
3–5 minutes. Long enough for the formulation to penetrate the undercoat; short enough to keep bath times reasonable in a busy salon schedule. Rinse thoroughly — residue will attract new dirt and shed hair.
Should I pair this with the Deshedding Conditioner? +
Yes, when shedding is severe. The shampoo loosens undercoat during the wash; the conditioner ($24.99) continues that work while softening the coat so the loose fur releases cleanly during brushing. Used together they're substantially more effective than either alone — each product targets a different phase of the shedding cycle.
Is Furgenics Deshedding Shampoo safe for puppies? +
Yes. The formula is tearless and free of common irritants — parabens and synthetic dyes — which makes it suitable for puppies, senior dogs, and dogs with sensitive or reactive skin. Always patch-test on a small area first with any new shampoo.
How does this compare to FURminator Deshedding? +
Both are professional deshedding gallon shampoos. Furgenics retails at $24.99 vs FURminator deShedding Ultra Premium Shampoo: $86.01 CAD (as of 2026-05, Amazon Canada), and both work as part of a complete deshedding process. Furgenics dilutes at 16:1 concentrate — significantly lower cost per working gallon for the same category of use.
Do you offer a discount on first orders? +
Yes — our current first-order discount:
Save 20% on your first order with code FUR20. Max 4 gallons per order. New customers, first order only.
The code works automatically at checkout and is limited to one use per customer.
Is Furgenics made in North America? +
Yes — Made in Canada. We manufacture in Vaughan, Ontario, and ship direct to groomers, salons, and facilities across the United States and Canada.
How quickly will my order ship? +
Orders placed before 2pm Eastern on business days typically ship the same day. Canadian orders ship direct from Vaughan, Ontario with 2–5 business day transit. US orders fulfill via Amazon with 3–7 business day transit. You'll receive a tracking number by email once your order ships.
What is your return policy on gallons? +
